VSAT Network
Due to complete range of broad band services, all possible over IP networks and the quality, mobility and flexibility of such services to the customer needs Nar Technologies has designed and installed a VSAT network based upon the iDirect Technologies VSAT HUB solution to deliver a cost effective, reliable IP network to the customers who need an easy way of communications with the World and are not satisfied of the old generation communication services over satellite.
This new generation network is providing an easy access, to the Internet or any other kind of media connection, between the user’s stations, configurable in the HUB, with a guaranteed high standard quality of service. The main HUB is located in Oman-Telecom’s dish farm near Muscat/Oman connected to Flag backbone for Internet access needs.
The HUB is fully redundant in platform and RF part including the antenna and RFU and equipped with a complete set of spare parts, re-planed after each network size expansion during maintenance period. This is raising availability of the service upper than 99.9% of the times.
Also the feature of having an operational network over up to 5 satellites makes it a huge point of presence for Nar Technologies network connecting almost half of the world. iDirect HUB technology with more than full compliance to telecommunication needs of broad band services over satellite is the market leader for delivery of high service quality level over satellite IP networks to its customers.
Indicative details about iDirect HUB plus a technology comparison between iDirect HUB technology and the legacy VSAT HUBs is listed here. Nar Technologies HUB will provide a reliable access for each terminal. Link budget calculation commits on availability rate of more than 99,9% between each remote and the HUB station in OmanTel’s dish farm by single hop connection and availability rate of more than 99,8% between two remote sites with double hop connection. Customers will have support of all Nar Technologies Support Center, on-line monitoring giving in real time statistics on each Customer’s remote terminal connection parameters including link utilization, availability, latency, trough put and packet loss.
Why iDirect
Nar Technologies VSAT plan has been to support the following features to satisfy its customers by achieving a high level service profile. The using VSAT network platform should be compliant to these items due to the ITU-T NGN regulations and compliance to real time services required conditions over
IP networks:
-
Quality of IP over VSAT network (low packet round trip delay -up to 600 ms in single hop up to 1200 ms in double hop-, minimum Jitter value, no packet loss, routing policy, ease of network management over same IP protocol)
-
Pure IP protocol, -no encapsulation to DVB, Frame Relay, X25, or any other media, this is due to the mismatch of dynamically sized IP packets and these kinds of fixed frame size medias. As a result of this mismatch unacceptable jitter and delay in a loaded network can be listed which can reduce the real time services quality till the outage for video conference in double hop connections.
-
Traffic shaping and direct control over the network’s IP protocol layer traffic for time slot assignment to the congested remote terminals, this will cut the jitter caused by the time slot request and assignment procedure delay after congested remote bandwidth trigger.
-
Operation over a number of satellites in a single network coverage.
-
Possibility of using MF-TDMA to reduce the inroute carriers bandwidth and use of small antennas for the remote side.
-
the minimum jitter -which is the delay variation- gives the customer the possibility of using real time services such as Voice over IP, Video conferencing, etc.
-
All network topologies (mesh, star, hybrid, multi-star) should be possible, this is due to the flexibility to the customer network traffic flow, bandwidth efficiency and required latency.
-
Support of 3DES/AES Encryption method for data security over air interface security.
-
Reservation MF-TDMA return channel that is 4 times more bandwidth efficient than Slotted Aloha.
-
Turbo Codes on the forward and return channel for a 1.5 dB power advantage over RSV codes Rapid bandwidth on demand.
-
1.2 spacing – delivers 14% savings in bandwidth
-
Proprietary IP encapsulation that is 15% more efficient than MPE (multi-protocol encapsulation)
-
Reliability and flexibility to the customer requirement
-
Competitive performance
-
Cost affectivity
-
Backup HUBs support
-
Redundancy support
-
Cost affectivity during all steps of network ramp up expansion in number of terminals, this will be a realistic linear network cost increase during expansion and the operator can re-plan the HUB by increase of network nodes add the required equipments for standard support and backup.
-
Bandwidth optimization.
-
Networks configured in 1kbps increments to get exactly the bandwidth required.
-
Embedded two way TCP and HTTP acceleration for IP performance increase.
-
Low price remote terminal earth stations.
-
Possibility of sharing bandwidth between a number of remotes to reduce the space segment costs over satellite.
-
CIR (Committed Information Rate), bandwidth on demand or combination bandwidth assignment for each remote.
-
Automatic uplink power adjustment for remote terminals.
-
Monitoring, management and log system accessible all over the network.
-
Possibility of operating Next Generation Networks (NGN) based telecommunication networks due to the low jitter and delay value and end to and QOS enabled pure IP network.
-
Ease of installation for remote terminals, due to reduce of installation time and make it portable for moving earth stations.
-
All in one box, the satellite modem plus a router which have the TCP acceleration and encryption embedded is needed. It gives the user an Ethernet port to access the network and doesn’t need an extra router or server beside it which each one has a failures.
-
At least up to 4 Mbps upstream for each remote for the utilized remote sites satisfaction
-
At least up to 16 Mbps Downstream for each remote for the utilized remote sites satisfaction
-
Support upper than 1000 remotes.
-
The rain and path loss margins over the covering area should be calculated and covered so the network quality will not be affected by the normal weather changes.
-
An acceptable voice over IP (VoIP) call quality support is needed.
-
Video conferencing and such real time services should be possible in double hop connections without video quality decrease or unacceptable delay.
-
Support for MPLS and VPN for the users who need private networks.
-
Support for transfer of enterprise customers’ network control to their technical team by remote control
-
Possibility of configuring different service profiles for different service level customers.
The iDirect infinity HUB platform, 2 other mesh VSAT HUB-less expensive equipment sets (Viasat Linkway2100 and Skylinks8000) and pure SCPC based satellite connections are the only VSAT equipments which are supporting the mentioned level of IP connection quality to make these real time services possible.
The first two platforms have not the remaining features listed for price performance and flexibility to the customer needs, the second Skylinks8000 needs some external router and acceleration box to operate, and third could not be accepted due to the inefficiency in bandwidth usage, high price remote earth stations and need for extra satellite modems in central site for each added remote to the network.
The VSAT platforms which are using DVB-RCS (DVB Return Channel System) technology all have the IP layer service quality problem. Most of DVB-RCS VSAT equipment manufacturers are trying to match the fixed big DVB-S1 and DVB-S2 frames to variable size IP packets but till now they have not been successful to satisfy real-time services customers over the IP layer provided by DVB-RCS method.
Also the bandwidth efficiency of these products is so much lower than the others due to the DVB and its jitter in IP layer traffic overhead. The DVB itself has an overhead for IP packets’ traffic. This is added to the jitter-caused-retransmitted-packet-traffic-flow which will increase TCP sessions’ required bandwidth compared to the case which the session is establishing on a connection with low jitter.
The Gilat, Alcatel and EMS are working to cut these problems by adding some extra voice service software and hardware to their VSAT platform for support of voice with buffering, extra time slot assignments for voice traffic and etc., but the remaining real time services over these kinds of DVB-RCS platforms are not yet supported and the bandwidth efficiency is decreasing by these methods. Also an ITU-T regulation for NGN networks is the Network and Access layer independence due to the manageability, mobility and flexibility of the multi-media services over IP networks for the customers.
This dependency between VSAT IP network layer and voice over IP access layer is a mismatch to NGN IP based network requirements. In addition the IP layer customers who have not access to the DVB-RCS terminal will not be able to have a real time service operational over their IP connection via these DVB-RCS VSAT terminals.
In spite of occasional differences between iDirect infinity platform architecture and these legacy VSAT technologies, this platform is the only VSAT which is supporting -or some thing more- for all customer needs as listed before.
This direct IP over VSAT technology without any translation to any other media is an invention in VSAT market which is expanding iDirect technologies’ market share by a highest ratio ever seen for a company like this. The iDirect remote terminals are the most cost effective terminals for the required number of remote sites by the customer for every communication needed over IP platform.
